Mind Over Matter is a neurocognitive training program designed to enhance both physical function and cognitive resilience in individuals experiencing cognitive impairment or early-stage neurodegenerative conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s.
This innovative intervention combines boxing-based reaction training, dance-like movement sequences, functional strength and balance exercises, cross-body coordination, and cognitive tasks into a unified experience known as cognitive layering. By intentionally combining physical movement with cognitive challenges, the program strengthens brain and body systems together.
Functional exercises such as knee hinges, heel or toe lifts, and directional stepping are choreographed into dance-like sequences aligned with rhythmic music. These movements improve mobility, coordination, and fluidity of movement. Boxing-inspired drills enhance reaction time, spatial awareness, and dynamic balance, while cross-body movements support motor planning and coordination between both sides of the body.
Music plays a purposeful role throughout the program, guiding timing, setting movement pace, and stimulating brain regions associated with attention, memory, emotion, and rhythm processing.
What sets Mind Over Matter apart is its multi-region brain stimulation approach, targeting key areas involved in movement and cognition, including the motor cortex, cerebellum, basal ganglia, prefrontal cortex, and auditory system. This layered, multisensory design promotes neuroplasticity, supports cognitive reserve, and helps delay functional decline.
By addressing both physical and cognitive challenges in an engaging and supportive environment, Mind Over Matter offers an evidence-informed approach to preserving function and enhancing quality of life for individuals navigating neurodegenerative disease.
